A House Location Survey shows the property lines and locates the improvements made on the lot.   In fact, this document uses the legal description and any easements, right of ways, and other specific property features to showcase the property in its entirety. 
House Location Surveys are often required by lenders at closing when purchasing a new home.  
The House Location Survey shows the approximate relationship of structures (house, garage, etc.) to the apparent boundary lines.   This type of survey should not be used to identify boundary lines.  
A Boundary Survey is needed to know where your boundary lines are and before putting up a fence, landscaping or building close to the property lines, etc. 
When it comes to buying residential and/or commercial real estate, a location drawing is often the requirement. However, if the lines of the property are unknown, or a development is needed, a boundary survey will be required and is necessary.
